History

1990's

Ken Catran worked with Fremantle Pictures when he started to develope the Shortland Street Script. He created the characters and the settings for the series and in his first series a very well known New Zealand line now was used; 'You're not in Guatemale now, Doctor Ropata'. At the start of the show many viewers thought that Shortland had very bad acting and a poor storyline.

1990's

In 2001 Shortland Street lost 14 cast members for which they were either let go from their contracts or had decided to leave the show. One of the most memorable moments in the 2000's were when Angela and Rangi were killed off on the show and Frank, Minnie, Moira, Kate, Blake, Al, Dean, Cassie, Erin, Paul and Sofia were all written off. In 2004 the show's ratings sky rocketed when Dominic Thompson, who was Ferndales killer, kidnapped Chris Warner, a Shortland Street Surgeon, and attempted to kill him. In 2005 Shortland Street came first place in the Woman's Day TV Choice TV Awards. They also then won the same award the next year as well. Also Doctor Ropata appeared on the 4000th episode for the next eight weeks.
